At times, the hiring process can feel unmethodical – when you do stumble across an ideal candidate it can feel like a coincidence.
For this blog, I wanted to offer you actionable advice to help you make the perfect hire every, single time.
1. Understand exactly what you are looking for
You need to go back to basics and define what you are actually looking for in a candidate.
To do this, answer the following –
- What skills and experiences are required and preferred for this role?
- What is the intangible mindset needed to succeed?
- What are the skills and experience that could be acquired through performing the job?
With clear answers, you will be able to at least visualize your ideal candidate.
2. Engage market insight to determine a ‘best possible’ candidate profile from the marketplace
In a talent-driven market, talents are always looking for opportunities that can provide them with learnings, therefore they may not have acquired the exact skills you are looking for.
By engaging market insight through an experienced search partner, the hiring team can determine the profiles of the best possible talents and set realistic expectations to secure talent in a timely manner.
3. Look for internal talents first
Sometimes the best talent is already in the business!
If they are within the organization, you can be assured they have the correct mindset – but do they have the required skills and experience?
The answer to this is dependent on your succession planning.
If you have identified someone who you think would thrive in a new role, you need to start preparing them for this 6-18 months before.
4. Build an effective hiring and selection team
If there are no internal candidates, you need to look externally. To successfully hire externally, a strong team is required – comprising of a recruiting specialist, an HR business partner and a hiring team.
Depending on your firm’s recruiting capabilities, an experienced outside search partner should be engaged to save time and the opportunity cost that occurs when a critical position remains open.
5. Commit to a positive and successful hiring and selection process
The best talent will always be influenced by their experience during the hiring and selection process – my advice, ensure it is a positive and nimble one which leads to a win-win.
Many variables can affect the outcome however designing a process that is fluid, adaptable and results-driven is the best way to ensure you find the right candidate.
